I just won a copy of DESTRUCTION DERBY RAW, I usally don’t buy disc only games but it has “Press Disc” writtin in the middle which I thought was odd, I also could not find another disc to compare it too so I brought it for 10 bucks.

So is this just like a Promo release, or something else?

Very interesting, only time will tell what it actually is.

I am guessing its a press version of the game for review purposes because if it was a ‘Press Disk’ it wouldn’t even have the game on it and would include stuff like screenshots, marketing docs etc.

When ya get it, stick it in a PS1 and see what ya get, if the game dont start stick it in your PC :)

So, I got these two babies from an australian auction yesterday. As I had not too much time yesterday evening some quick impressions:
- there is just “Gran Turismo 2 Final”, an ESRB rating (which is used for NTSC games) and the PlayStation logo printed on the discs. Inspecting the first disc with Explorer gave me the usual SLES/SCES file but as SLPS (11016 i think, can’t remember right now) for a NTSC-J JAPAN release. As the japanese first release has a picture cover maybe it’s a “Best Buy Greatest Hits bla bla” re-release. I visited all cover sites in my bookmarks but just found a CD picture of a first release.
I started the game with the Emulator and overall text is english and on *some* buttons there is also japanese text next to the english one. I haven’t played this game for ages so in the short time I tested it I saw no differencies to the PAL release.

What puzzles me? The missing SLPS number on both CDs. The word “FINAL” on both CDs. Not one mention of a SpineNumber.

Your ideas?

*dons eye patch and wooden leg*

arghhhhhhhh me hearties, shiver me timbers and pieces of eight.

Seriously though.

Best thing to do is stick it in a jap playstation and see if it plays, but I know thats not as easy as it seems.

Another thing you can do is look at the discs, is the underside blue? is there any etchings near the centre?

I am in no way an expert in Japanese games so I am not even sure they came on blue discs, but I still stand by my statement of pirate!!! Jap game with NTSC rating on it just screams bad copy!

the CDs both are silverish/blueish on the underside, like a normal CD. Will check more thorough tonight.
Yeah, maybe just a “Pirated Game”…

This is just a long shot but I know there were some emulated (Bleem!) games for Dreamcast like Metal Gear Solid. I’m sure there was a Gran Turismo game for it too. Could it possibly be something of that sort?

Edit: just made a quick search about this, and actually you need the original game discs since bleem is just an individual disc, so, nope, not as I said.

hmm, I’m sure the “Bleem” logo would have been somewhere on the game discs so I rule this possibility out. I will check the print quality of the label tonight.

A friend of mine used to import those silver pirates from Taiwan or Japan or sumsuch. Still has a stack of ‘em. Dunno if they had colored labels on the CD.

Well I got the press disc today, it also came with the game disc which was a plus. Oh the disc is just that, a Press disc. It contains some art work, documents like what the game is an FAQ, some photos of the developers, etc, I can take some pictures and upload the disc someone if you wants it. (it’s would only be 60 meg)

A regular press kit, I guess. Some (only a few) come in jewel cases, when there is no sort of promotional package designed specially to promote the game. Most of the packages are ordered to media companies that design and produce this kind of unusual and interesting editions for Sony. I found several when searching the internet for additional information. Some producers don’t bother that much with press editions ($$) and just make a regular cd with a different artwork or even a regular hand-writen disc. I have a few press discs for Disney games that were sent to me for free by a german ebay seller who realised I was interested in those editions when I purchased something else. They came in similar cases.

I will write up the process of press kits when I get a moment. Been involved in making a few of them, might help give people an idea of how and why they are used.
