2008 - My Unlucky eBay Year

Well not for the first time this year I have lost another auction on eBay. i think my record so far this year is something like 10% win - 90% loss.

This time round it was the cufflinks that were posted here by Saturn. And I have a feeling it is the start of a worrying trend.

I have noticed the prices slowly rising on standard PS1 stuff recently, more and more ‘new faces’ coming in and bidding on stuff. I have seen promo games go for stupid money, press kits that up until now have been passed by everyone suddenly get 20-30 bidders.

I have also noticed both AtariBuff and mine’s eBay profiles being hit a lot.

It looks like PS1 collecting is turning a corner and soon its going to be a fight of wallet size proportions in order to win the stuff you see.

Now I may well be scaremongering a little, and it just might be me being unlucky on eBay. But if my year continues like it has so far I doubt I will be picking up many new and interesting things this year.

I can’t believe you lost the cufflinks…

This is the reason why I started using different methods to win certain items but even so I have lost many if not most of them. I recall you and Ataribuff gave me some problems in the past with more unusual editions but I was able to find the most important ones specially press kits. Yet, I managed to lost some I tried very hard to bid on.

Don’t call it your unlucky ebay year. Your collection is way too far away. You have less stuff to buy so get ready to bid higher in fewer items. I’ll try to give you a hand whenever I find something interesting that you are missing.

As I spent less time on searching eBay for stuff I miss until December last year (a few limited editions and some country variants) I didn’t catch the trend that many new faces kicked in. I began to rise the pressure before christmas and have won two limited editions I missed (one even never heard of before). I will present them as soon as they arrive because also Defcon and our Dutch Dynamite are missing them. For one of the auctions I expected a real bidding war as one of the bidders in the bidders list is a big time Resident Evil collector, bidding on everything RE and who also did bid big sums on stuff he wanted in the past (I checked his recent feedback and money he spent to prepare myself for my final bid). But that war never happened as he let the auction pass and I got that Resident Evil stuff for cheap money.
So, Def, keep cool. I’m sure you’ll bragg about new acquisitions on this very website pretty soon and leave me lying in the dust :)

I have seen that edition before but I no longer collect metal cases. They get rust after a couple of years… I have quite a few for ps2 getting rust and I can’t prevent that. It’s the area where I live I guess.

Not quite. I live a few km away from the sea and near a small mountain range. There’s a bit of humidity during winter.

  • Lucks turned. Well thanks to the missus finding the cards and the spec ops pack. The Tomb Raider thing I expected to rise quite high as there are a lot of tomb raider collectors.

Defcon got lucky finally but placed me in the unlucky row. I lost a few interesting things the last days. Mostly due to forgetting the auctions because so much else going on in real life.
